11 Cabins in Hiawassee, GA That Are Perfect for Families

Hiawassee has become one of our favorite mountain destinations for weekend getaways with our toddlers. When we first started visiting Hiawassee, we made quite a few day trips because it was easier than packing two baby beds. We also had no idea how to choose from the many beautiful cabins in Hiawassee, GA!

Once our oldest toddler started sleeping in regular beds we were able to start spending the night away. It was a game changer for us! There are so many cabins in Hiawassee so we want to share a few of our favorites that have made our weekend getaways extra special. Keep reading to see our list or go straight to the list!

How many vacation rentals are available around Hiawassee, GA?

Hiawassee is not a large tourist destination like some other mountain towns. This town functions like a typical small town in north Georgia but it happens to have the exciting Lake Chatuge, as well as some spectacular mountain views. You won’t find as many homes available as vacation rentals around Hiawassee because most of the homes are filled with permanent residents.

In total, Hiawassee offers a little over 1,100 properties that are available to be booked as a vacation rental. Of those, about one third of them are traditional mountain cabins. That means you have 400 options to choose from when finding the perfect mountain cabin if you want that rustic log cabin feel.

There are also a wide variety of vacation rentals in Hiawassee that are “traditional homes.” They may not look like a home you would expect to find in the mountains but they all have something special to offer that separates them from houses outside of mountain towns. That something special could be a wonderful view, lakefront property, unique location, or an interesting history.

Moral of the story: you have options! We try to book ahead when we travel but recently we booked a 2-night stay about three weeks before we travelled to Hiawassee. Our options were definitely more limited but there were still plenty of choices! I would recommend planning as far in advance as you can to secure the type of vacation rental you really want.

Vacation rentals in Hiawassee, GA

The vacation rentals in Hiawassee fall into three main categories: mountain cabins, traditional homes, and lakefront properties. Our favorite type of rental in Hiawassee is actually a traditional home because the views for many of them are so spectacular. We recently stayed in one home on the north side of town and this was the view from our driveway:

However, there are some amazing mountain cabins and lakefront properties that we have not had the pleasure of exploring (yet). The ones that we have explored will be on our list below!

What types of Hiawassee cabin are available?

There are three main types of Hiawassee cabin available: mountain cabin, valley cabin, and lakefront cabin. They all have amazing views but these views can each look quite different from each other. Mountain cabins will have more of a side of the mountain feel where you are seeing mountains at mountain level.

Valley rentals will have amazing mountain views from the base of the mountains. It almost makes the mountains feel more grand to me which is why I love staying in the valleys or on the smaller hills. Some of those views are the absolute best!

Lakefront cabins will give you the best of both worlds: beautiful mountain scenery combined with beautiful water scenery. These two views combined are especially beautiful at sunrise and at sunset when you can see how the shadows are cast on the mountains and Lake Chatuge.

What is the price range for Hiawassee cabin rentals?

Cabins in Hiawassee vary in price depending on the time of year you will be traveling. Peak season for most vacation rentals will be September through December because of the beautiful fall foliage and holiday seasons. Outside of the peak season, you can find vacation rentals for $50-100 per night easily. Within the peak season, you will find more rentals that fall within $150-350 per night. The most expensive rentals fall within $600-700 per night.

Our top 11 kid-friendly cabins in Hiawassee, GA

What makes a cabin kid-friendly? Well, that’s a good question. We travel with toddlers so it is important to us that we are able to spend down time at the house without feeling like the kids will fall off of the side of the mountain. We also need to be in a quiet area so that nap time goes well (because it HAS to go well). So, we look for a rental that has: outdoor space to play, more than one bedroom, close amenities, and quiet surroundings. Here are our top 11 kid-friendly cabins in Hiawassee, GA:

Mountains R Calling

The view at this place is amazing! It has 2 private bedrooms and tons of outdoor space. We would recommend walking around to find some great photo opportunities! We have never met someone in Hiawassee who was offended by a family walking on their grass, just FYI. This house is also right in the heart of Hiawassee so it is convenient to everything!

Luxury Mtn Living

This house checks all of our cabin boxes! There is an outdoor area to play, it is close to downtown Hiawassee (and Lake Chatuge), and there are 2 private bedrooms. Bonus: the inside is very modern and updated throughout!

Retreat to the Farmhouse on Lake Chatuge

This wonderful wooden farmhouse has an abundance of outdoor activities to do on the property. Our only caution is that it is on the far north side of the lake, meaning it is about 15-20 minutes away from downtown Hiawassee.

“Lost Lake Lodge

This house is perfect for larger families since it sleeps 9. It has also sits perfectly on one of the fingers of the lake and has a wonderful outdoor area to relax or play in. My favorite is the hot tub, even though my three year old says he is “burning” anytime he gets close to one.

Mtn Chalet w/ Hot Tub

Mountain Chalet is a perfect name for this vacation house. It sleeps 8 people in 3 bedrooms and has a beautiful screened in porch. This is the rental for you if you are looking for modern features, gorgeous updates, and amenities throughout. It is southwest of Hiawassee so expect a 15 minute drive into town.

Lake Chatuge Cottage with Dock

Okay so it’s not a cabin. But, it sleeps twelve, has an awesome game room in the basement, and a private dock to the lake. I think we can excuse the lack of mountain-y cabin for now. This home has beautiful water views, a nice outdoor area, and plenty of bedrooms. Our only reservation is that it is about 15 minutes south of Hiawassee.

Dancing Bear Lakefront Cabin

If you love a traditional mountain house with classic mountain decor then this is your place. With beautiful mountain views and lake access, this home sleeps 6 people in 2 bedrooms and has some vintage cabin features that even include paneled walls.

“‘Frog Leap’ Hiawassee Cabin w/Blue Ridge Mtn Views”

This place looks like its right on a mountain but it actually has a nice flat area right next to the door that is perfect for little kids to get some outside play time. This cabin sleeps 4 people in 2 bedrooms (or more if you have portable beds) and beautiful wooden walls/ceilings. The views from the table are picturesque!

“Modern Cottage on Lake Chatuge”

This 8 person sleeper has 4 bedrooms and a perfect family setup. It sits on the water and the hosts provided kayaks! The interior is definitely modern and updated. My only reservations, as a parent with young children, was the sloping yard towards the water. There isn’t a flat place to play but the spacious inside and porch area made up for it! This home is located north of Hiawassee you you’ll be making a 15 minute drive south to visit local restaurants.

“Haven Ridge”

Ordinarily I do not recommend a one bedroom home for families because my family does not do well in one room on vacation. However, the one bedroom in this house is HUGE and could easily fit a couple of portable beds, comfortably. This house has some modern updates and some beautiful mountain views from the back deck. There is also a space to play in the front of the house. This house is the farthest away from Hiawassee out of all of the houses on our list. That’s not necessarily a bad thing if you really want to get away, but it’s something to keep in mind when you are planning meals.

“Chandler Cove”

There are so many things we love about this little place! Actually, it’s not little. It sleeps 10 people in 4 bedrooms! It has a beautiful sunroom and deck that overlooks a nice level yard (you know how I don’t like to fall off of the mountain). It is also in a quiet neighborhood so its perfect for afternoon walks. The location is also mere minutes from downtown Hiawassee. Just in case you need one more reason, you have a view of the lake from the deck and sunroom. Check it out!!
